m23 is a software deployment system for Debian GNU/Linux that allows you to install and administrate hundreds of clients via network. It can partition and format clients and install Debian, (K/X)Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, OpenSuse, and CentOS operating systems on your virtual and physical clients. Group functions allow the comfortable update and installation of further packages during operation. Mass installation functions simplify your administration chores. m23 has a Web interface. Backup functions are implemented for server and clients.

This release introduces a new tool called "IP manager". It allows you to further control the integrated DHCP server directly from the Web interface to keep track of machines which are not m23 clients. Administrators can build and search an inventory of external machines and prevent mistakes by blocking specific IP addresses, IP ranges, or client names for their use as m23 clients. Dynamic IP ranges for external devices can also be determined. Support for clients in subnets has also been added. Several bugs were squashed.

Due to changes on external servers, download mirrors were replaced and a Trinity mirror was added. Thus, client installations are also faster now. The package sources lists were extended by further configuration options, where the file systems supported by the distribution can be chosen and the package manager can be configured individually. Users can now request online help, where the support service can access the server, if they register for this (payable) service and activate port-forwarding. Further improvements concern the xorg.conf, LibreOffice, Ubuntu integration, and minor bugfixes.

This new major release adds OpenSuse to the list of supported client distributions. The m23 server was updated to Debian Squeeze. m23 now supports many additional languages on the client side. LDAP now also works for the halfSister distributions. Hardware detection was improved, and some traps for unexperienced administrators were eliminated.
There were also a lot of minor changes and bugfixes which make using m23 more comfortable.

A client name may be up to 64 characters long and can contain dots for use as a Web server. A client name is checked whether it is a valid domain name. Ubuntu can now be used as a server. Ubuntu can now be installed in text mode. The package source lists of Ubuntu 10.04 were expanded. Every m23HSAdmin function now sends detailed status messages to m23 server. Installation of grub was improved. Linux kernel was updated to version 2.6.38.2. Small hardware detection was integrated into m23 boot media. An emergency NIC module loader was added. Hardware detection hwinfo was refined. m23hwscanner was improved. Many minor changes were made.
